SCHOOL
Damien’s thoughts on Sculpture and education:
In the teaching of sculpture I aim to help the student become aware of sculptural qualities & values through practical experience guided by demonstration. I use reference material that gives example of these values in the sculpture of past civilizations as well as those of the contemporary world, to augment the practical experience of the student.
My practical focus is to promote excellence in traditional clay modelling , plaster mould making & casting, which provide the foundation & understanding needed to fully develop one’s potential.
I also teach stone carving & construction methods for interested students. I encourage the study of the figure & nature in general, as well as an ongoing exploration of the abstract. I see drawing as the fundamental discipline of all the visual arts, & I teach it concurrently with the sculpture practise.
I respect each student as an individual with their own specific needs & requirements, & I develop their ability to meet these needs by building skills which help them to take achievable steps along their personal path.
My wish is that I pass on my knowledge & skills to each student & that ultimately those who so desire will be equipped to become a professional practising sculptor.
